Dutch artist, Henk Heideveld, presents portraits of some seminal figures who have featured in Irish folk music and culture over many years and who have influenced him.
Born in the Netherlands in 1950, Henk Heideveld began working as a professional artist in 1975. For this exhibition, he will show a selection of work including some portraits of Irish friends who are important to him. In particular, he will depict friends who have inspired him either through their work or their friendship. Among them is Fr Pat Ahern (founder of Siamsa Tíre), whom he first met in 1995, and who introduced him to Peadar O’Riada and John Moriarty.
Heideveld’s art is based on contrapositions and oppositions: belief and disbelief, heaven and holocaust, Holland and Ireland, God and Art. He explains that this is why he uses text in his work every now and then, as you can see from the title of this exhibition.
