Painting The Free State

An exhibition of 20th Century Irish Pinting presented in association with Limerick City Gallery of Art.
This exhibition is selected from the permanent collection of Limerick City Gallery of Art and features important works by major Irish artists of the mid 20th century including Jack B Yeats, Paul Henry, Sean Keating, Maurice Mac Gonigal, Walter Osborne and Percy French.
The isues raised in the election and curation fit key themes in the visual arts programme in Siamsa - issues of cultural identity and the dynamic betwen the visualisation of national identity, fine art practice and folk / popular culture.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

...is a showcase of the work of graduates of the Post-Leaving Certificate Art, Craft and Design Course in Tralee Community College.
The exhibition featured the graduates' own selection from a year of work and provided us with an insight into arts education [the processes - and pressures that can form creative personalities] and, the visual expression of a new generation of diverse individuals considering a career in the arts.

Retro Scoip 2004

Samhlaiocht Chiarrai has pent the past two years looking at SCOIP and mapping out where it needs to go as an open submission for artists in Ireland.
The artists exhibiting in retro scoip 2004 have all been shown in Scoip at some stage over the past twelve years.
They are from or were residing in Kerry when they were selected for Scoip.

Vamp
Vamp [Video Art Monitoring Programme] is a truly innovative project which explores the interaction between art and film by examining how visual arts employ video as a medium. Features short pieces on video by artists Nimh Lawlor, Dawn Lee, Aoife Mc Govern, Irene Murphy, Gail O' Reilly, Unna Quigley and Michael Daly.

Experimental Programme
Short films entered in competition in the experimental category featuring new work by Andrew Duggan, Joe Lyons, Denis Connolly, Anne Cleary and the Electric Rain Project.

Thirty Years On
A selection of experimental films made with the assistance of Arts Council Funding over the past 30 years. It features short films by Paddy Jolley, Clare Langan, Ciara Moore, Joe Comerford and Neil Jordan.

an exhibition of painting, print, glass work and sculpture featuring new work by artists from the Muscrai Gaeltacht in West Cork. It is the latest in the 'cultural traditions' series of exhibitions in Siamsa and explores the significance of place as a contextual force in contemporary visual arts in Ireland.

January 13 - February 3 Artspace I

All around the country artists have set up studio spaces which have become centres of innovation and experimentation in contemporary visual arts work. In ' Artspace I' Siamsa travels up the West coast to select an exhibition from one of the longest established artists' groups in the country, the Artspace Studios in Galway City. An exhibition of cutting edge work and an insight into the collective creativity of the studio complex.

 
 
 

February 10 - March 3 'Talmhú' by Mary Flynn

The second one person exhibition by one of the most interesting artists to emerge from Kerry in some time. Mary Flynn follows up her successful one person exhibition, 'Going Solo' (1998) a powerful series of images which interrogate the present trhough reflection on the past.

 

March 10 - April 6 New Work by Katie Simpson

Exhibition Award Winner in SCOIP 2000, Katie Simpson is a young Dublin based artist whose work has gained considerable critical acclaim. Her interiors, constructed in segments and displayed as long panels, have a disturbing edge which belies their attractive appearance and muted handling. This exhibition has been especially produced for the gallery spaces in Siamsa.

 
 

April 14 - May 5 SCOIP 2001

Annual selected exhibition organised by Samhlaíocht Chiarraí. Representative of the best of contemporary visual arts practice in Ireland, SCOIP 2001 will be selected by peter Murray, Curator of the Crawford Municipal Gallery in Cork, and Nigel Rolfe, pioneer of performance art in Ireland and leading exponent of multimedia work in the country at present. The exhibitors will be slected in January and the exhibition will open during the Samhlaíocht Chiarraí arts festival in April.

 
 

May 8 - 19 'A Journey Into Colour'
Commemorating Maggie Fitzsimons (1947 - 2001)

A special exhibition of work by Maggie Fitzsimons in recognition of her contribution to the arts in Kerry. ''A Journey Into Colour' traces Maggie's creative development as a painter, her work as a designer for stage and her contribution to the development of the arts in Kerry through her work as Artistic Director of Samhlaíocht Chiarraí.

 

 
May 24 - June 16 'All About Us'

An exhibition of work by participants in the Post-Leaving certificate Course in art, craft and design in Tralee Community College. Never predictable, always exciting, the exhibition showcases the work of individuals about to embark on a career in the arts. The Exhibtion is organised in association with Tralee Community College and Kerry Education Service.
