OILEÁN
THE NATIONAL FOLK THEATRE OF IRELAND
This production celebrates and explores Blasket Island living while
also challenging our own notions of identity as contemporary islanders.
Premiered in 2003, Oileán marked the 50th anniversary of the departure
of the Blasket Islanders to the mainland. The Great Blasket Island,
located off the coast of West Kerry still retains an almost mystical
significance for many, both from Ireland and abroad. The way of
life of the islanders and their spirit of survival is framed in
this production, which captures the essence of this island community,
their traditions and customs, their wealth of song and story, their
love of life and their strong kinship with one another.

NORTHERN
LIGHTS
Northern Lights is a blending of Norse and Irish: sagas, stories,
soundscapes, cultural flavours and perspectives, through a meeting
of their music and songs. Like the historic relationship between
these cultures the traditional music of both sometimes clashes,
creating a musical tension and a creative dissonance. Also, in keeping
with that relationship, there is noticeable common ground borne
of cultural exchange. Northern Lights delves into the shared themes
of these traditions to create a unique and intriguing fusion. A
mix of Irish and Scandinavian music. Everything from Medieval Norse
and irish songs to traditional dance music

MIDSUMMER
Traverse Theatre Edinburgh and Cork Midsummer Festival Cork
It's Midsummer's weekend in Edinburgh. It's raining. Two thirtysomethings
are sitting in a New Town bar waiting for something to turn up.
He's a failing car salesman on the fringes of the city's underworld
and she's a high powered divorce lawyer with a taste for other people's
husbands. She's out of his league and he's not her type at all.
They absolutely should not sleep together. Ever. Ever. Which is
why they do. Midsummer [a play with songs] is the story of Bob and
Helena and a great lost weekend of bridge burning, car chases, wedding
bust ups, bondage miscalculations, midnight trysts and horrible
hungover self loathing misery.
Featuring Cora Bissett and Matthew Pidgeon as the ill-advised love
match, Midsummer is a quirky, charming love story by one of Scotland's
leading playwrights, David Greig and top Edinburgh singer/songwriter,
Gordon McIntyre.
Greig's lo-fi production is delivered with such knowing wit,
panache and theatrical verve as to be irresistible and unmissable.

TEARMANN
THE NATIONAL FOLK THEATRE OF IRELAND
Premiered in 2006, Tearmann brings the audience on a moving journey
to the poorhouse and the Great Irish Famine. Many of those who perished
during the famine carried in their folk memor an unknown library
of music, song and dance. For some, the last refuge was the Poorhouse.
As the drama unfolds, a pair of dance shoes becomes the embodiment
of not only all that was lost, but everything that was saved, everything
that is still cherished in Irish folk traditions. The dance shoes
come to symbolize this wealth of culture - these are magical shoes,
they have a life of their own…
