National Folk Theatre of Ireland Auditions will take place 15th and 16th June

It’s audition time again at Siamsa Tire for the National Folk Theatre Training Academy giving young talented Irish singers and dancers from Kerry an opportunity to train to become a member of the company of the National Folk Theatre of Ireland. Aimed at young people aged 7-12 years, auditions for the 2018-2019 academic year will take place on Friday 15th June from 6-8pm at Teach Siamsa na Carraige, Dingle and on Saturday 16th June from 10am – 2pm at Siamsa Tíre, Tralee. Auditions will also take place in local Tralee and Dingle schools scheduled at their convenience in the coming weeks.

Applicants must have a song and an Irish dance piece prepared for their audition and need to demonstrate some previous interest in Irish dance and/or song, as this training is not for complete beginners. Auditions are by appointment only.  Successful candidates take classes weekly in Siamsa Tíre for a period of three years from October to May. A fee per terms applies.

“Kerry has such a wonderful pool of talented traditional Irish performers and every year we are delighted to offer them an opportunity to train with Ireland’s only traditional theatre company with potential to showcase their talents on the Siamsa stage to international audiences. Successful candidates learn the specific Siamsa Tíre style of Irish song, dance and drama. For some, this leads to being eventually cast in the National Folk Theatre after more training and for others they gain very solid performance foundations that they go onto use in their future training and performing careers,” said Anne O’Donnell, Training & Development Officer, The National Folk Theatre of Ireland.

The strength of Siamsa Tíre’s performing company lies in the extended Community Cast who have trained and performed with the company now celebrating 50 years of performances. The National Folk Theatre Community Cast performers complete a minimum of three years of training with the company before going on to advanced training as part of their performance preparation. Students who have completed the training offered by Siamsa Tíre have gone on to achieve national and international success as performers, including John Fitzgerald, Suzie Griffin, Sarah Jane Drummey, Justin Walsh and Paula Murrihy.

Siamsa Tíre will celebrate the graduation of its third year Training Academy students on Tuesday 29th May with a showcase performance.  The students showcase what they have learned in the disciplines of traditional Irish singing, the Munnix style of traditional Irish step dancing, drama and music.
