MAY 2008 back to top

Every Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday throughout May at 8.30pm
SAN AM FADÓ
National Folk Theatre of Ireland

In times past almost every farmyard activity had a tune to it. San Am Fadó weaves the work and the workers, the worksongs and the dances into a marvellous fast-moving, thrilling piece of theatrical entertainment. This production dramatises a whole year's cycle of living and working the land, emphasizing the labour and rituals that celebrated the seasons. Through lively singing, music, dancing and mime, San am Fadó moves from the open air of the bog fields and harvest festivals, to the warmth of the hearth-lit kitchen and celebrates the joys and sorrows of a typical family in Ireland in times past.

Saturday 10th and every Thursday & Saturday thereafter throughout May @ 8.30pm
CLANN LIR

They carried in their folk memory an unknown library of music and dance. For many of them, the last refuge was the Poorhouse, where they found shelter. Tearmann is the story of how, in this place of refuge, a tradition survived.

Premiered in 2006, Tearmann brings the audience on a moving journey to the poorhouse and the Great Irish Famine. Many of those who perished during the famine carried in their folk memory an unknown library of music, song and dance. For some, the last refuge was the Poorhouse. As the drama unfolds, a pair of dance shoes becomes the embodiment of not only all that was lost, but everything that was saved, everything that is still cherished in Irish folk traditions.
